This qualification provides individuals with the essential knowledge and skills needed to assist a qualified Swimming Teacher in delivering high quality inclusive swimming lessons in a range of settings, for example at a leisure centre, swim school or club learn to swim programme.

SEQ Level 1 Teaching Assistant – Course Overview

The Level 1 Teaching Assistant qualification serves as an essential foundation for those aspiring to become qualified teachers. This course provides invaluable experience working with swimmers of varying abilities. The Swim England learn-to-swim framework consists of seven stages, (find out more), guiding participants from their initial entry into the water to mastering all four swimming strokes and a comprehensive skill set to ensure their competence. The role of the assistant could be helping across all abilities, but quite often is an invaluable asset to new swimmers to help build confidence.

As a Teaching Assistant, you’ll play a crucial role in the teaching team, supporting various tasks such as:

  • Setting up equipment
  • Taking attendance
  • Leading warm-up activities
  • Motivating and encouraging swimmers
  • Providing assistance and corrective feedback
  • Supporting individual swimmers during lessons

Your primary responsibility will be to assist and take instruction from the Level 2 instructor, contributing to the smooth operation of each lesson.

The course is divided into classroom instruction, peer-teaching exercises in the pool, and hands-on assistance during lessons. Continuous assessment will occur throughout the program, with feedback provided at every stage to help you feel supported and to enhance your skills and knowledge through the guidance of your tutor.

The course topics include:

  • The legal aspects of assisting in swimming lessons
  • The responsibilities of a Swimming Assistant
  • The swimming pathway, fundamental movement, core aquatic skills and component parts of strokes
  • Scientific principles of swimming
  • What makes up a lesson plan, equipment and communications skills
  • How to identify anxiety and use of motivational techniques
  • The type of assistance you can provide

Assessment will be conducted using Google Classroom, where you will complete:

  • Theory questions – 17 questions evidencing your strong knowledge of all the topics.
  • Review record – Evaluating your assisting performance
  • A professional development plan – consider you next steps

The practical component includes observation and assessment by your assessor – This includes your ability to communicate well, support swimmers and work to the expected standards.

Fast Track – SEQ Level 1 Teaching Assistant and Level 2 Teaching Swimming Combined

You can combine the level 1 and level 2 courses to fast track to become a Swimming Teacher. To book this course you must be 16 years of age or older on the first day of the course.

You will also need a strong knowledge and experience of working with children, previous teaching or coaching experience or previous swimming knowledge and background.

Drawing from over 30 years of experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge as a Swim England Tutor, Open Water Swimming Coach, Swimming Teacher specialising in disabilities and a scuba diving instructor. I began my aquatics journey at the age of 18 as a lifeguard in America.

​​In my role as a Swim England Educator, I am dedicated to training the next generation of swimming teachers. Having instructed over 2000 teachers, who each potentially influence up to 80,000 children weekly, the impact of my teaching reaches far and wide.

You don't have to be a great swimmer to be able to teach. As long as you are competent in the water, there is no swimming assessment on your own technique.
